Originally nicknamed the "Zen Monkeys," the Taomarin line are based on the concept of spiritual balance. This is reflected in their equilateral stats as well as learning each move at an even level.
Orangutao is based on the same creature as the Gen VII Pokémon Oranguru . However, Orangutao was designed long before that Pokémon was announced.

Orangutao is based on an orangutan and Buddhist monks . It also draws inspiration from the common depiction of Budai , a semi-historical Chinese monk often confused for the Buddha .
